Studio NOR has masterfully breathed new life into the historic "Train Street" within Beijing's 798·751 Park. What was once a desolate coal yard and railway terminus, later repurposed into an underground garage, and then a static display of decommissioned train carriages, has been ingeniously transformed. Through a thoughtful and innovative micro-renovation approach, the area has shed its former inertia, emerging as a dynamic and engaging communal destination. This revitalized corridor now serves as a testament to how architectural intervention can reignite the spirit of a place, making it relevant and attractive to contemporary urban life.
The "Train Street" project is situated at the heart of Beijing's prominent 798·751 Park. Historically, this site was the bustling coal yard and railway endpoint for the 751 Factory. Over time, its industrial utility waned, leading to its conversion into an underground parking facility. Following this, a collection of retired train carriages were strategically positioned along the railway tracks on the plaza that capped the underground garage. Despite these previous efforts to integrate the site into the public realm, it had unfortunately fallen into a state of disuse and lacked any discernible vitality.
