A recent study by Truecaller reveals that over 76% of Indian consumers favor phone conversations when interacting with businesses. This preference highlights a substantial opportunity for voice AI to automate and enhance customer support and outreach in the region. Ringg, an innovative voice AI startup, is capitalizing on this trend, already managing 20 million call attempts each month, and anticipates continued growth in demand.
The company recently announced a significant financial boost, securing an additional $10 million from Peak XV Partners as an extension of its Series A funding. This new investment brings their total Series A capital to $15.5 million, following a previous $5.5 million round earlier this year. Initially known as DesiVocal, a text-to-speech firm, Ringg pivoted its strategy due to the high costs associated with developing its own speech models. The company now focuses on creating advanced voice AI agents for corporate clients. Early successes include partnering with Indian fintech giant Cred, followed by collaborations with other prominent Indian startups like Flipkart, Practo, Groww, and PolicyBazaar.
Ringg's co-founder, Siddharth Tripathi, noted that while the company initially handled high-volume, low-complexity tasks such as outbound calls and lead qualification, they soon recognized the need for more enduring applications. This led to a strategic shift towards more intricate functions, including healthcare appointment scheduling, recovery of abandoned e-commerce carts, and stringent 'know your customer' (KYC) verification processes for financial technology applications. Currently, voice interactions constitute over 70% of Ringg's operations, but the company is actively diversifying into other communication channels like chat and WhatsApp. For select clients, such as Shell, Ringg also automates browser-based support. Tripathi emphasized that Ringg aims to be a comprehensive platform for AI agents that deliver tangible results for businesses, rather than merely offering voice-activated solutions. While most of Ringg's clientele is based in India, it also serves some clients in the Middle East and the United States. Instead of direct sales to American companies, the startup intends to collaborate with Global Capability Centers in India, which are increasingly crucial for multinational corporations' back-office and support operations. This approach allows Ringg to integrate its automation capabilities with human support services. The company develops its own speech recognition and generation models, with aspirations to eventually manage the entire voice technology stack. For now, it functions as an orchestration layer, dynamically assigning tasks to various models based on specific use cases.
Rishen Kapoor, a principal at Peak XV, praised Ringg’s deep technical expertise, attributing it to the company's origins as a research lab focused on model development. This robust technical foundation enables Ringg to effectively manage complex enterprise tasks from beginning to end, including merchant onboarding and critical L1 and L2 support, ensuring both quality and consistency. The Indian voice AI market is highly competitive, with numerous players including global model developers like Deepgram, ElevenLabs, and Cartesia, as well as local innovators such as Sarvam and Smallest.ai. Additionally, orchestration-focused startups like Bolna and Blue Machines compete in a similar segment, while specialized firms like Gnani and Arrowhead target the finance sector. This intricate ecosystem, comprising model creators, orchestrators, and application-level providers, underscores a significant trend: financial success and market resilience increasingly depend on cultivating strong customer relationships and delivering concrete outcomes. Ringg presently employs 40 individuals, having expanded its team by over 15 members in the past quarter. The company is actively recruiting for forward-deployed engineering roles, which demand a blend of technical proficiency and product management skills, alongside researchers dedicated to optimizing the cost-efficiency of its models.
Ringg's advancements signify a profound shift in how businesses engage with customers through AI. By focusing on complex, outcome-driven solutions and securing strategic partnerships, the company is poised to redefine industry standards and foster innovation. This progress underscores the transformative power of artificial intelligence to not only streamline operations but also to elevate the overall quality of customer interaction, ultimately contributing to a more efficient and interconnected global economy.
