In an effort to diversify tourist engagement with its vast historical treasures, the city of Rome has launched an innovative program. This initiative involves offering virtual tours, accessible via livestream, of the ancient Roman dwelling known as the House of the Griffins. This site, previously inaccessible to the general public, promises a fresh perspective on Roman heritage, drawing attention to areas often overshadowed by more frequented landmarks.
Situated atop the Palatine Hill, adjacent to the iconic Roman Forum and Colosseum, the House of the Griffins is a significant component of the Colosseum Archaeological Park. Discovered in the 19th century, this ancient residence dates back to the 2nd-1st century BCE. Its surviving two stories feature an atrium with a pool at ground level, alongside several meticulously preserved and elaborately decorated underground chambers. The walls are adorned with stunning frescoes and mosaics, notably featuring two white stucco griffins, which inspired the house's name. Centuries ago, a palace was constructed directly above the dwelling, effectively preserving it beneath the surface.
After extensive restoration work spanning several years, which focused on enhancing structural integrity, conserving delicate wall paintings, and installing modern lighting, the House of the Griffins will welcome its first virtual visitors. Beginning March 3rd, live video tours will be conducted by guides from the Colosseum Archaeological Park. These guides, equipped with head-mounted cameras, will navigate the underground complex, providing narration in both English and Italian. Participants will gather in a designated space near the ancient home, experiencing the exploration remotely.
Initially, tours are scheduled for Tuesdays, with each group limited to 12 participants to ensure an intimate and engaging experience. This project represents a key component of Italy’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan, an European Union-backed initiative designed to bolster cultural and tourism sectors through technological advancements. Known as Italia Domani, or “Italy Tomorrow,” the House of the Griffins tour is the second of ten planned projects under this ambitious national scheme.
