The firm has meticulously integrated a new extension designed to complement the existing timber-clad aesthetics. Originally constructed in 2020 within the serene Rye Nature Reserve, the initial phase of the project involved transforming a partially built structure, with a primary focus on capturing expansive views of the natural surroundings and the sea. The recent expansion, dubbed the Druim Extension, shifts its attention to fostering a deeper connection between the home and its secluded rear garden, enhancing the residents' engagement with their private outdoor space.
The studio's director, Rob Pollard, highlighted that the primary objective of this new phase was to elevate the interaction with the private gardens and the northern outdoor areas, an aspect constrained by budgetary limitations during the initial build. To ensure a cohesive integration, the architects utilized the same contractor and materials employed in the original construction, resulting in a seamless blend between the old and new structures. The Druim Extension now accommodates an enlarged dining area, featuring expansive glazing and sliding doors that open directly onto a patio and the garden. This space, designed as an extension of the existing kitchen, is thoughtfully arranged around a solid wood table, a prominent skylight, and a central log burner, creating an inviting and functional environment.
Further enhancing the indoor-outdoor experience, a spacious window seat is nestled within the glazed corner of the dining area, shaded by deep soffits crafted from narrow timber planks that extend across the ceiling. This design choice, according to Pollard, provides a distinct sense of being immersed in the garden, a quality absent in the original design. The extension also prompted a reorganization of the home's internal layout, introducing a new boot room and entrance hall that offer direct access to the staircase, which was previously accessed through the living room. Additionally, a glazed corridor now replaces a paved pathway to the annexe, providing both shelter from coastal winds and uninterrupted views, while the reoriented living room maximizes vistas of the sea and nature reserve.
