Innovative Community Hub to Transform Rural Senegal

In August 2026, a groundbreaking architectural proposal by Greek designers Afroditi Ioannidou and Vladimir Gligorovski of K-Studio secured the coveted first prize in the Kaira Looro Architecture Competition. This competition, spearheaded by the humanitarian organization Balouo Salo, sought designs for a community center in the rural Casamance region of southern Senegal. The winning design, drawing profound inspiration from the traditional impluvium houses of the region, which center domestic life around a courtyard for social interaction, light, and water collection, creatively expands this concept to serve an entire village. The core construction material for this visionary project is locally sourced rammed earth, complemented by a distinctive, sweeping bamboo roof that gently slopes towards the ground, encircling a welcoming central plaza.

The competition brief specifically challenged young architects and students to conceive a versatile space for education and communal activities, emphasizing designs that could be realized by local communities using readily available natural materials and simple construction techniques, thereby eliminating the need for heavy machinery or specialized labor. Ioannidou and Gligorovski’s design masterfully addresses these criteria, featuring an elongated, subtly curved structure that integrates a library, study areas, a large community hall, workshops, and service zones. Each of these spaces opens towards a central gravel courtyard, functioning as both an intimate courtyard and a vibrant amphitheater, suitable for daily individual use and larger collective events, performances, or village gatherings. The roof, a central element of the design, boasts two unevenly pitched sections that provide deep shade and facilitate passive ventilation by allowing hot air to escape and drawing in cooler air from below. Beneath its outer metal cladding, a layer of thatch offers insulation, while a robust framework of paired bamboo columns and beams forms the primary structural support.

The architects meticulously developed their construction system to ensure on-site simplicity. Locally harvested bamboo is ingeniously joined using rope and galvanized wire, creating a resilient and adaptable framework. The individual rammed-earth sections are formed from laterite soil, abundant in the region, featuring small, diamond-shaped openings that invite airflow and filtered natural light into the interiors. Bamboo shutters offer flexibility, allowing rooms to open up completely, transforming covered areas into a single, expansive pavilion when needed. Water management is also thoughtfully integrated; rainwater collected by the large roof is channeled to handwashing stations, while the central gravel courtyard facilitates ground infiltration during Casamance's rainy season. This innovative approach to resource management underscores the project’s deep connection to local traditions and environmental sustainability.

Beyond the first-place honor, the jury recognized other outstanding contributions. Marta Kuczynska and Jakub Czak from Poland were awarded second prize for their rectangular design, which incorporated flexible rooms and handwoven pivoting panels around a shaded communal area. The third prize went to a Colombian team comprising Karol Eliana Cuellar Narváez, Jhuliana Giraldo, Juan Sebastian Piedrahita, Juan Santiago Uribe, and Oscar Valencia, for their concept of a partially excavated rammed-earth crescent that leverages the earth's natural thermal properties to regulate interior temperatures. These diverse, prize-winning entries collectively highlight the emphasis on natural shading and self-construction as critical architectural solutions for the region, with the first-prize proposal particularly standing out for its successful elevation of a local domestic architectural form into a vital piece of shared community infrastructure.
