Shabaka Hutchings, known for his contributions to musical groups such as Sons of Kemet and The Comet Is Coming, is launching his solo career with a self-titled moniker. He is scheduled to release his new album, titled 'Of the Earth,' on March 6. This record will be the inaugural release from his newly established label, Shabaka Records. The album’s creative direction was partly influenced by D’Angelo’s iconic ‘Brown Sugar.’ Listeners can preview two tracks from the album, “A Future Untold” and “Marwa the Mountain,” now. Following the album’s release, Shabaka will embark on a series of performances across the United States. His tour includes stops at Solar Myth Philadelphia on March 25, New York’s Knockdown Center on March 26, and the Big Ears festival in Tennessee, where he will present both a solo set and a collaborative performance with Thurston Moore.
Shabaka shared insights into the album's inspiration, referencing D'Angelo's 'Brown Sugar' and his own shift from playing the clarinet and saxophone to primarily the flute, a change first showcased on his 2024 album, 'Perceive Its Beauty, Acknowledge Its Grace.' He noted that 'Brown Sugar' was his first CD purchase, sparking a lasting interest in the emotional depth achievable through self-produced and performed music. He describes 'Of the Earth' as a celebration of creative freedom, reflecting his journey of learning and musical exploration since the pandemic, during which he acquired new skills in music production and learned to play the flute.
This new release follows his previous work, including the acclaimed 'Perceive Its Beauty, Acknowledge Its Grace' and the 'Possession' EP, released in late 2024. 'Of the Earth' features a diverse tracklist including 'A Future Untold,' 'Those of the Sky,' 'Go Astray,' 'Step Lightly,' 'Call the Power,' 'Dance in Praise,' 'Ol’ Time African Gods,' 'Marwa the Mountain,' 'Light the Way,' 'Stand Firm,' 'Space Time,' and 'Eyes Lowered.'
Shabaka's journey from ensemble musician to a solo artist who embraces new instruments and production techniques highlights a profound dedication to artistic evolution. His willingness to explore new creative avenues and share his personal growth through music serves as an inspiring example of continuous learning and passionate self-expression. This new chapter not only enriches his own musical catalog but also encourages listeners to pursue their own creative paths with courage and curiosity.
