The fashion landscape in Hong Kong is undergoing a transformative period, with an increasing focus on sustainable practices. A recent study highlights a substantial rise in the adoption of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles among fashion professionals. This shift is not only driven by industry commitment but also supported by a growing consumer base that is willing to pay a premium for products aligned with these values.
Hong Kong's Fashion Industry Embraces ESG with Enthusiastic Consumer Support
In a significant development for the fashion industry, the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) released its latest ESG Index on August 24, 2026, revealing a robust increase in sustainability adoption. The percentage of Hong Kong fashion entities engaged in sourcing or selling ESG-compliant products and services surged to an impressive 46% in 2026, marking a considerable jump from 33% in the previous year. This growth underscores a pivotal moment for the sector's commitment to environmental stewardship, social responsibility, and sound governance.
The study further illuminated the industry's deepening understanding of ESG's importance, with 92% of fashion practitioners acknowledging it as crucial for the sector's future, an increase from 85% in 2025. Notably, the proportion of those who deemed ESG "very important" rose from 15% to 23%, indicating a heightened recognition of its impact.
Financial incentives are also playing a role in this transition. Among businesses offering ESG-related products, 61% reported enjoying additional profit margins of at least 10%. Mirroring this trend on the consumer side, nearly half (47%) of buyers seeking ESG-focused products expressed a willingness to pay a premium of 10% or more. Alice Tsang, Principal Economist for HKTDC's Global Research Team, emphasized that these findings confirm sustainability's evolving role as a key commercial driver, delivering tangible financial benefits alongside ethical considerations.
The overall Hong Kong fashion industry ESG Index saw a positive climb, reaching 65.5 in 2026, a 2.3 percentage point increase. Individual sub-indices also showed strength: the Environmental Sub-index rose to 64.3, the Social Sub-index to 67.0, and the Governance Sub-index to 66.1.
Furthermore, the survey highlighted the significance of digital solutions in achieving ESG compliance. Sustainable supply chain platforms emerged as the most valued tool, cited by 54% of respondents. Artificial intelligence analytics and supplier collaboration tools also received substantial recognition, each noted by 31% of participants. For robust ESG reporting and compliance, transparency and traceability tools were identified as the leading solutions by 44% of respondents, followed by ESG certification (40%) and ESG audits and risk analysis (28%).
The commitment extends beyond Hong Kong, with 45% of Chinese Mainland respondents rating ESG as "very important" in their business decisions, a notable 27 percentage point increase from 2025. Bruce Pang, HKTDC's Director of Research, highlighted Hong Kong's strategic position as a platform for businesses seeking sustainable opportunities, international collaborations, and guidance on navigating global ESG mandates.
The growing embrace of ESG principles within Hong Kong's fashion industry signals a profound evolution. This commitment, reinforced by consumer willingness to invest in sustainable choices, sets a promising precedent for a more ethical and environmentally conscious future in global fashion. The financial benefits reported by businesses underscore that sustainability is not just a moral imperative but also a viable and profitable business strategy. This movement could inspire other sectors to integrate ESG more deeply into their operations, fostering a broader wave of sustainable development.
