The Asian American Foundation (TAAF) and the Sundance Institute have once again joined forces to present the newest cohort for their collaborative Fellowship and Scholarship program. This marks the fourth consecutive year of their partnership, which is dedicated to supporting film and television artists from Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) backgrounds.
This initiative is designed to provide AAPI creatives with crucial resources, including access to extensive networks of peers and mentors, along with opportunities for professional development. The program aims to empower these artists, helping them to advance their careers and bring authentic and diverse narratives to the screen. A recent survey highlighted a significant lack of representation, with 39% of Americans unable to name a single famous Asian American, often defaulting to martial arts stereotypes when they do. This fellowship seeks to challenge such perceptions by showcasing a wide array of stories spanning genres like horror, comedy, documentaries, family sagas, and heist films.
Six artists were selected for the prestigious Fellowship program, receiving a year-long immersive experience focused on career advancement, practical guidance, and a substantial $20,000 grant. An additional six individuals were awarded Scholarships, which include a year-long developmental program offering personalized mentorship both virtually and in-person at the renowned Sundance Film Festival. Through these programs, TAAF and the Sundance Institute are committed to nurturing the next generation of visionary storytellers, enabling them to share their bold and unique voices with a global audience.
