Coach Joey McGuire emphasized that maintaining six quarterbacks on the roster has always been the team's objective for the current season. This strategy became particularly relevant following the return of Will Hammond from an ACL injury sustained in October and the unfortunate ineligibility of transfer Brendan Sorsby due to gambling violations, which subsequently led to the dismissal of his lawsuit against the NCAA.
Castellanos' Collegiate Journey and Impact
Castellanos brings a wealth of experience, having played for Florida State last year and Boston College for two seasons prior. His collegiate career began in 2022 at UCF, where he participated in five games during his freshman year, culminating in an appearance in the American Conference championship game. Coach McGuire expressed confidence in Castellanos's ability to contribute, stating, "Tommy provides an experienced quarterback presence whom we believe can help us secure victories when needed. His athletic prowess is also a significant asset that will enable us to diversify our offensive schemes."
Navigating NFL Draft Rules and Eligibility Waivers
A notable aspect of Castellanos's recruitment involved the Big 12's recent adoption of a rule, mirroring those in other Power Four conferences, which prohibits players who were on NFL rosters from returning to college. This rule also applies to players who declared for the NFL draft but did not withdraw their names in a timely manner. Castellanos, however, was never formally on an NFL roster, having gone undrafted in April and only participating in a tryout as a receiver for the Miami Dolphins during their rookie minicamp.
Legal Victories and a Renewed Opportunity
Despite previously announcing his intention to enter the NFL draft in December and having his appeal for an additional year of college eligibility denied by the NCAA, Castellanos's situation changed dramatically. On August 21, a Kentucky judge issued a temporary restraining order, granting Castellanos and nine other athletes an extra season of eligibility. This legal development followed a June NCAA rule change that allows players who began college in 2023 or later five years to complete five seasons of collegiate sports.
Anticipation Builds for the Season Opener
Castellanos recently participated in a fan event with the Red Raiders, who had an open slot on their roster. The reigning Big 12 champions are set to host Abilene Christian in their sold-out season opener next Saturday. Throughout his 38 college games, Castellanos has demonstrated a strong passing ability, completing 477 of 816 passes (58.5%) for 6,449 yards, including 48 touchdowns and 28 interceptions.
