Ukrainian defense intelligence has revealed that Russia recently deployed an advanced variant of its Iskander short-range ballistic missile, dubbed the 'Iskander-1000', during a summer attack on the Ukrainian capital. This marks the first recorded use of this upgraded weapon. This development coincides with a noticeable escalation in Russia's use of ballistic missiles against Ukraine, as Moscow continues to modernize its arsenal amidst Ukraine's ongoing challenges in securing adequate air defense interceptors.
The Iskander-1000, also known as the 9M723-2, is an enhanced version of the 9M723-1, featuring a more powerful engine and launch system that extends its operational range. Ukrainian assessments indicate this upgrade boosts its maximum reach by approximately 100 miles, now estimated at around 340 miles, while retaining most other original components. This extended range allows Russian launch platforms to strike Ukrainian cities, including Kyiv, from greater distances, further complicating Ukraine's defensive efforts. Russian advancements in missile technology, including improved maneuverability, have frequently tested Ukraine's air defense capabilities, particularly its US-supplied MIM-104 Patriot systems.
Despite the Patriot system being Ukraine's primary defense against ballistic threats like the Iskander and Kh-47M2 Kinzhal missiles, its effectiveness has been intermittently compromised by Russia's tactical improvements. A US defense intelligence report last fall highlighted that these enhancements made Russian ballistic missiles increasingly difficult for Patriot systems to intercept consistently.
