Volkswagen has initiated the mass production of its new ID. Cross electric sport utility vehicle at its manufacturing facility in Pamplona, Spain. Thomas Schäfer, the CEO of the Volkswagen brand, emphasized that this new model embodies the core values of Volkswagen by offering a contemporary, dependable, and, most importantly, economically accessible electric vehicle option. This launch is a pivotal moment for the company, as it aims to democratize electric vehicle ownership, ensuring it is a viable choice for a broad spectrum of consumers rather than an exclusive offering.
The ID. Cross, which shares its production line with the T-Cross and Skoda Epiq, represents the vanguard of Volkswagen's strategy to introduce a new family of compact, entry-level electric vehicles. With initial orders having commenced in July, the vehicle's pricing starts at approximately €36,525 in Germany, with a more budget-friendly Trend model expected to debut at about €27,995. Customers can choose between a 37 kWh LFP battery or a 52 kWh NMC battery, offering a WLTP range of up to 427 kilometers. The vehicle's interior boasts a modern digital cockpit, featuring a 10.25-inch 'Digital Cockpit Pro' display and a 12.9-inch central infotainment screen, alongside a retro display mode that pays homage to the classic Golf 1.
This strategic move underscores Volkswagen's ambition to significantly bolster its presence in the electric vehicle sector, challenging established leaders and emerging competitors alike. By focusing on affordability and practicality, the ID. Cross is poised to attract a wider audience, thereby accelerating the global transition towards sustainable transportation. Volkswagen's commitment to innovation and accessibility with the ID. Cross not only strengthens its product lineup but also reinforces its role as a key player in shaping the future of electric mobility.
