Volkswagen has unveiled a more budget-friendly variant of its ID. Polo electric car, responding to strong market demand. The introduction of this new model, which boasts a smaller battery and a more attractive price point, is a strategic move by the German automaker to solidify its position in the fiercely competitive electric vehicle sector, especially against emerging players from China.

In a significant development for the European electric vehicle market, Volkswagen officially began accepting pre-orders for the ID. Polo with a 37 kWh battery earlier this month. This move comes after the initial, higher-capacity 52 kWh model, launched in April at approximately 33,795 euros ($40,000), quickly garnered widespread interest. The more economical ID. Polo Trend, equipped with the 37 kWh battery, is now available in Europe, priced from 24,995 euros (around $29,000), offering a WLTP range of 207 miles (334 km). Additionally, Life and Style trims are also on offer with the 37 kWh battery, starting from 29,195 euros ($33,500).
Designed primarily for urban driving, daily commutes, and errands, this new ID. Polo variant emphasizes practicality and efficiency. It supports DC fast charging at up to 90 kW, allowing the battery to replenish from 10% to 80% in approximately 23 minutes. Standard safety features across the base Trend version include Side Assist and Lane Assist, enhancing driver confidence and road safety.
The vehicle's interior showcases Volkswagen's contemporary design philosophy, featuring a 10-inch Digital Cockpit display and a 13-inch Innovision infotainment screen, complemented by a thoughtful integration of physical buttons for ease of use. Upgrading to the Life trim introduces advanced functionalities such as Adaptive Cruise Control, a rear-view camera, park distance control, FronT-Cross Traffic Assist, an automatic anti-dazzle mirror, and wireless smartphone charging. The premium Style trim elevates the experience further with Volkswagen's IQ.LIGHT LED matrix headlights, illuminated LED light strips, 3D taillight clusters, and distinctive illuminated VW badges both front and rear.
Physically, the ID. Polo maintains dimensions similar to its gasoline-powered counterpart, measuring 4,053 mm in length, 1,816 mm in width, and 1,530 mm in height, with a 2,600 mm wheelbase. However, thanks to its flat battery pack design, the EV model offers superior interior space utilization. Propulsion options include three power outputs: 85 kW (114 hp), 99 kW (133 hp), and 155 kW (208 hp). An exciting GTI hot hatch variant, delivering 166 kW (223 hp), is slated for release this autumn. The 85 kW and 99 kW models are powered by the 37 kWh LFP (lithium iron phosphate) battery, while the 155 kW version utilizes a 52 kWh NMC (nickel-manganese-cobalt) battery, which extends the range to 282 miles (454 km).
A notable innovation is the standard inclusion of vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability, allowing the ID. Polo to supply up to 3.6 kW of power to external devices, such as e-bikes. In the UK, the ID. Polo Launch Edition will be available from July 30, starting at £25,555 ($34,000), with the standard Life model arriving on September 10, priced from £23,945 ($32,000). The 52 kWh 211 PS models are eligible for the £1,500 UK Government Electric Car Grant. Alongside the ID. Polo, Volkswagen also launched pre-orders for the ID. Cross, an electric SUV counterpart to its popular T-Cross, starting at 27,995 euros (about $32,000) in Germany.
