Racing Bulls driver Yuki Tsunoda is currently under investigation by FIA race stewards for a potential infraction during the restart procedure at the recent Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix. This scrutiny could potentially cost the Japanese driver a valuable championship point, which he secured after a commendable performance at Monza's high-speed circuit.
The incident in question took place on lap 6 of the race, following a red flag period triggered by Charles Leclerc's early accident. As the cars reformed for the restart, Tsunoda's vehicle, positioned at 14th on the grid, appeared to be improperly placed outside its designated grid box. Although race control noted the potential issue at the time, a formal review was deferred until after the race concluded. Subsequently, Tsunoda and representatives from his Racing Bulls team were summoned to the stewards' office to address an "alleged breach of Article B5.9.4 of the FIA F1 Regulations – Start Procedure infringement at 15:41."
Tsunoda's outing at Monza was otherwise strong, marking his first point-scoring finish of the season in his second Grand Prix appearance. He ultimately crossed the finish line in tenth position, contributing to a positive day for Racing Bulls, as his teammate Arvid Lindblad secured eighth place after a competitive battle in the midfield. This performance is particularly significant for Tsunoda, who is serving as a reserve driver for Red Bull this season after losing his regular seat. He returned to Racing Bulls to deputize for Liam Lawson, who in turn was filling in for the injured Isack Hadjar at Red Bull Racing.
Reflecting on the situation, Tsunoda expressed some confusion regarding his exact grid position during the restart. He stated, "I was a bit confused starting between 14 and 15. In my view, I didn't really gain the position before the red flag. I thought I was 15th." Despite the uncertainty, he maintained confidence that his actions did not confer any unfair advantage, adding, "But at least I parked behind the box, pretty far, so I don't think I gained any advantage for that. So let's see. I hope everything is okay." The outcome of the stewards' investigation remains pending, and it will determine whether Tsunoda retains his hard-earned point.
