Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) has presented its comprehensive vision for Baku Expo City, a sprawling development in Azerbaijan. This extensive 198-hectare site is set to feature a diverse array of living spaces, from compact one-bedroom apartments to spacious family residences. Beyond housing, the masterplan incorporates essential civic amenities, vibrant cultural venues, expansive public parks, modern medical facilities, and dynamic sports clubs, all designed to foster a thriving community.
Central to this ambitious undertaking is the new Baku Expo Center extension and a state-of-the-art Congress Hall, positioned as the heart of the development. This central hub will also include a hotel and a lively public square, complete with various leisure and hospitality options. The residential buildings are envisioned as interconnected neighborhoods, characterized by their stacked, blocky geometric forms and distinctive white facades, with green roofs seamlessly blending into the natural environment.
The design of Baku Expo City emphasizes harmony with its surroundings and sustainable living. The architectural layout strategically uses some buildings as natural shields against the region's strong winds, a critical consideration given Baku's reputation as the "City of Winds." Advanced pedestrian wind-comfort analysis was employed to mitigate wind speeds and create inviting, sheltered public areas. Furthermore, the development is nestled within an existing pine forest, with ZHA committed to preserving 80% of the 18,000 trees on site. The masterplan also includes a robust forestry management program and a replanting initiative to ensure the continued vitality of the forest. The integrated green roofs not only enhance the aesthetic appeal but also play a crucial role in reducing cooling energy demands, improving thermal insulation, and contributing to an efficient rainwater collection system.
